6 questions to ask yourself about your photographs

In Nederlands lezen

In this blog by photographer Jenna Christina, she asks 6 very interesting questions about family photography. The questions are especially interesting if I answer them as a mother, not as a photographer. I would like to write my own answers to the questions and encourage you to stop your hectic life for a moment and respond sincerely. As Jenna says in her blog, surely after answering these questions you will change the way you take photos of your family and you will consider new ways to save and enjoy them.

#1 HOW OFTEN DO I SEE MY FAVORITE PHOTOS?

En ik bedoel niet de foto's van deze zomer die je nog steeds in de telefoon hebt, nee. Ik bedoel tenminste And I don't mean the photos of this summer that you still have on the phone, no. I mean the photos of a couple of years ago at least. Or the photos of when you joined the family to celebrate an anniversary or birthday. Do you have them on the computer located and organized? Do you occasionally sit with your family in front of the screen to see them? Yes? Congratulations! Do not? It's a shame, you're missing great family moments ...

Do not? It's a shame, you're missing great family moments ...

When a child gets bored in our house and asks for television, there is no better activity than taking the photograph box and albums and watching them. At the moment the faces light up and they start to tell the stories of each moment. I already have the 2019 album on my to-do list, better do it as soon as possible and review everything we've experienced last year.

#2 HOW DO I MOST ENJOY LOOKING AT PICTURES?

I don't know about you, but it's hard for me to look at the photos directly on the computer with my children and look in the tangle of the folders. I am very clear that having more printed photos creates a totally different experience even if they are the same photos as on the computer.

If you don't have them on albums, on paper or on the wall, you probably don't enjoy them enough.

Being able to take them with your hands creates a more direct relationship with the senses and invite you to recreate yourself when you look at them. Seeing them on a screen creates a feeling of more temporality, you have it but it can be deleted at any time. In an album you turn the pages calmly, you enjoy them. When you have your favorite photo on the stairs, you see it every time you pass and even if you don't want to, you go back to that moment and smile …

# 3 DO MY KIDS SEE THEMSELVES IN OUR HOME?

I read an article on the internet about a study of how it affects kids to have printed photos at home. From the result they determined that in the houses with family photos, children have more sense of belonging to the family and better opinion of themselves, because they feel more valued. They occupy a place of honor in the house, and they love it. Amazing the effect of the photos !!! I have a picture of the face of each of my newborn children in the hallway. If we have a visit at home and it is the first time they come, my children always ask them to guess who is who of the babies. And they comment on what I have told them about how they were then. It is very tender how proud they are when they are told they were precious babies.

# 4 HOW DO I WANT TO REMEMBER THIS SEASON OF LIFE?

Now we are not aware of the importance that this stage of our life will have in the future, but I assure you it will. Because each stage has details that we will later remember with love. In my family, for example, I love how my oldest son seeks his independence inside the family, and becomes an adult man. With documentary photography, I can take pictures while doing sports, studying or lying in bed with your phone. I love how the relationship with his father has changed and how they interact when they talk. Of my young children there are also details of their way of being now that they are unique, wonderful and I feel the need to keep as a real treasure. I want the photos I take to serve to create our family stories that we will tell in a few years. I want to remember this stage of my life as it is, day by day, with its lights and shadows.

# 5 HOW DO I WANT TO BE REMEMBERED?

As I always take the photos at home I don't go out much in them. That is why I force myself to hand over the camera from time to time, it is important that we all be in the family photos. The photos I like the most are the ones I play with my children, because I think I don't do it enough and that's why those moments are so valuable to remember.

# 6 IF SOMETHING HAPPENED TO ME, WOULD MY FAMILY HAVE ACCESS TO THE PICTURES I’VE TAKEN OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS?

This question is uncomfortable but very necessary. Let's think that photos are a real treasure in families. Some images of Australia come to mind in the recent fires that have destroyed so many houses. In one of the interviews, a woman told television that she only had time to take the documentation and photos of the family ... In those critical moments is when we realize the true value of family photos.

The photos on paper are not a problem, if something happens to me they are in our house available to everyone. Of the photos in digital format I always have a backup and my family would have access to them. Although I wonder if in a few years, with how quickly technology changes, we can still see them. I remember that 15 years ago I passed my parents' movies recorded with a Super 8 camera to DVD. And now I am thinking that in a few years I will have to pass them to MP4, because the home DVD is already old.

What have you felt when answering these questions? Have these questions changed something within you? I await your comments to this post!
